This morning, Thursday January 20, 2011, at approximately 2:21 a.m., Portland Police officers responded to the report of a traffic crash on East Burnside Street at 102nd Avenue. Responding officers learned that an ambulance, on scene for an unrelated medical call at the MAX platform, had been struck by a vehicle. The ambulance was parked in the westbound lane of East Burnside Street with its emergency lights on and the paramedics had just loaded the patient, 51-year-old Wesley Poston, into the back of the ambulance.
A Kia sport utility vehicle that was travelling at a high rate of speed struck the back of the ambulance, knocking the ambulance 20 feet up onto the MAX platform. The patient was ejected from the back of the ambulance and received non-life-threatening injuries. The paramedic who was inside the ambulance, Melyssa Marchesi, was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The other paramedic, Sean Shanahan, was standing at the rear door of the ambulance when it was struck but was not injured.
The driver of the Kia sport utility vehicle, a 34-year-old female, was killed on impact. Her name will not be released until the Oregon State Medical Examiner can perform an autopsy and notify family members.
The intersection of East Burnside and 102nd Avenue was closed in all directions for several hours as officers from the Portland Police Bureau Traffic Division’s Major Crash Team conducted an investigation into the crash.
Anyone who might have witnessed this crash or the Kia driving prior to the crash is urged to call Officer Chris Johnson at (503) 823-2213.
